Watch: Driverless train hurtles along London track with door wide open

Video shows the Docklands Light Railway moving at full speed to the alarm of passengers on board

A video has emerged of a driverless train in London zooming along the tracks with one of its doors wide open.
It shows a Docklands Light Railway train proceeding towards Bank station in the centre of the capital at what appears to be full speed to the alarm of passengers on board.
The twelve-second clip was posted by John Nicoll, 36, a theatrical stage manager who lives in Greenwich.
He told The Telegraph: “We had stopped at Limehouse and then Shadwell for a bit longer than we should. I thought a passenger alarm had been hit.
“We left Shadwell and as we turned to go onto the Bank line a moment or two later the train suddenly stopped.
“I didn’t see it [the door] open so it could’ve been why we ground to a halt. It wasn’t until we were moving again that the man opposite me and I noticed it.”
Passenger trains are designed to automatically apply the emergency brakes if a door opens while the train is moving.
“I had my headphones on so it was the breeze which got my attention,” explained Mr Nicoll.
“Then a minute later we started moving and the door opened as we continued,” he said. “It either opened and that is why we stopped or it opened when we restarted.”
“Everyone in our carriage saw it so didn’t move until we were at the platform at Bank.”
Platform staff were made aware of the open door when the train arrived, Mr Nicoll added.
Transport for London (TfL) said the train had been identified and withdrawn from service to understand what went wrong with it.
The transport body declined to comment on what the fault was until it had completed its tests but added that there were no reported injuries.
All DLR trains have a member of staff on board to help passengers if needed.
Helen Gregory, TfL’s head of operations for the DLR, said: “We take safety extremely seriously and have asked our operator to urgently investigate reports that a set of doors on a DLR train was open when arriving at Bank station.”
“I can imagine it must have been very concerning for customers on board and we are working quickly to understand what happened.”
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch had been informed, TfL said.
A previous incident in 2018 also involved a Tube train travelling with its doors wide open.
Video footage of that incident, taken by a passenger, showed the Jubilee Line train proceeding at full speed towards Finchley Road station in north London.
